The Advantages of buying Dahlia Tubers from Small Farmers Like Me

First and most importantly-  I want you to succeed and enjoy the magic of Dahlia Flowers this Fall.  It will bring you joy, and others around you, especially  if you share them.

Second-  Dahlias can seem like a complicated flower so I am including lots and lots of information so you can better understand and it makes growing them almost easy.

Third- The secret is that there is no way to commercially grow dahlia tubers the way small farmers do.   The tubers grow in intricate clumps and have to be divided by hand, by a person.  Because of this they offer small tuber clumps for sale at big box stores- not individual healthy tubers, like you are buying from me.    Small clumps that are packaged for large sales are frequently put in situations that are not healthy for the tubers- like freezing temperatures.  Plus it will have many (if not all) the tubers with broken necks an those are at risk to rot in the container or rot after planting and easily destroy the whole clump.  Plus, commercially grown dahlias have a much higher risk of disease.  They aren’t able to sanitize regularly in the same way I am able to sanitize my much smaller equipment.

Fourth-  The only way to get the same flowers every year is by growing the tubers or growing cuttings.  The genetics of dahlias make is so that the seeds are pollinated and will grow a combination of original and new.  This is why you can eventually hybridize amazing new dahlias, but it means that you can get all kinds of crazy results when you plant seeds.  But, if you plant a dahlia tuber, it will produce that same flower as the tuber it grew from.  You can also buy cuttings, which can produce the same flower.  Cuttings can have issues with growing tubers,  and can take longer to develop.  Plus they can be more complicated to ship and more expensive to buy.  It is just not as good, in my opinion.

Fifth- I will only sell you healthy tubers that have a solid growing eye (which proves it is ready to grow), packaged and mailed out when you are almost ready to start planting.

Sixth-  You can email me questions and reach out for help when you buy from me.

Seventh-  You have 3 days to inspect your dahlia tubers and contact me with any problems.

Eighth-  By supporting my business, you are helping me toward my long-term business plan to use the profits from the flower business to support charities that help children around the world.  It will be a couple years before this is a reality, but I am working towards that goal. We are a very small business so our yearly growth expansion costs are significant.  Another part of my business, that I love, is that I am able to use my flowers to brighten up the lives of people living in the Treasure Valley.  I work with a large group of women at my church, and I contribute bouquets to lift those around me.
